This lack of representation could be correlated to the degree to which people of color receive mental health services. Specifically, according to the American Psychological Association’s, Mental Health Disparities: Diverse Populations, “rates of depression are lower in
blacks (24.6%) and Hispanics (19.6%) than in whites (34.7%)” However, “48% of whites received mental health services, compared with 31% of blacks and Hispanics.” There is a problem regarding stigmatization in diverse communities which creates unease to seek help. Films are unconsciously perpetuating that stigmatization by not representing more people of color with diverse mental disorders.
